Since 1989 the United States Team Roping Championships (USTRC) has produced championship team roping events for amateur ropers. A philosophy of fairness and 'roper first’ led to a TRIAD classification system that maintains the handicaps of almost 127,000 team ropers across North America, and offers the only classification system dedicated to provide everyone, regardless of age or ability, the fair and equal opportunity to compete.
A longtime part of amateur and professional rodeos, Team Roping became the sixth standard event at the National Finals Rodeo in 1962 and has seen phenomenal growth in the '90s (it is currently the fastest growing equine sport in the country).
Most USTRC ropings are four-steer averages. A winning team must catch four steers consecutively and their combined runs must be cumulatively faster than other teams in the competition. If a team misses just one steer, they're out of the money. As well as cash, teams can also win a trophy saddle or buckle. USTRC ropings combine skill, horsemanship, team work, and luck for ropers from under twelve to over eighty years of age.
