PacWest Barrel Races Come to Industry Hills for the First Time - A Quick Interview Pac West Barrel Racing made its Southern California Debut on Memorial Day weekend at the Industry Hills Expo Center. The show featured four days of racing by over 800 contestants who pocketed $60,000 in cash prizes. In addition, the Futurity, which we attended, was co-sanctioned by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) and would count moneys won toward the race for the world championship. The Futurity is a limited class open to all riders on horses which have never competed in a barrel race prior to December 1st of the prior year. It’s also limited to horses five years old and under. Being co-sanctioned by the WPRA meant that this event would bring many of the top California barrel racers to compete, including Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Linda Vick and California Circuit Finals champion Lyndee Stairs. We were able to talk with Lyndee and her husband Lance after the Futurity about barrel racing and her career. JM: How long have you been barrel racing and how did you get started? LS: I started in 4H when I was 12 and did all the events but found I liked the speed rather than the judged events best. I’ve been doing barrels for 30 years, 20 of those years professionally. JM: We’ve seen you at a lot of events. How much traveling do you do in a year? LS: It’s pretty much every weekend. I’m on the road at least 42 weeks a year. JM: We’ve seen you at the California Circuit Finals a number of times. How many times have you made the finals. LS: Seven years in a row; I won the Championship once. This is only portion of Lyndee's accomplishments. She has also been a 2-time National Barrel Horse Association California State Champion, a California Cowboys Pro Rodeo Association Finals Champion and WPRA Circuit Finals Rookie of the Year, among others. In addition, she and husband Lance have a barrel horse ranch in Hanford, California where they not only raise and train horses but instruct in the art of barrel racing as well. Lyndee was riding two horses in the Futurity. She placed 4th overall in the average on Fire Water Slidin and 7th on Jettin Bye. |
