Our first introduction to Luna came when we arrived at Rancho de Milagro the day before the Paso Fino Fun Show being held there. After meeting owner Bob Osborne, trainer Gerardo Matos, and other members of the staff, we were invited to see their latest foal, Luna Llena de Milagro, who had been born just three days prior to our visit. Like most foals, she was curious as to who these new people were but didn’t want to get too far from mom, just in case we weren’t friendly. When her mother, Luna Llena de Rosa, came over to say hello the filly decided it was safe and the introductions and the getting to know each other began. As with most babies, she wanted to smell and taste us to see exactly who we were and, after that, some scratching was allowed to see if we knew how to behave. When mom finally decided we were trustworthy and wandered off Luna decided it was time to play with us and proceeded to try and grab whatever looked interesting. It was only when she wanted the camera that Lani drew the line. It wasn’t until she decided that it was time to eat and then take a nap that Lani and I left to find out something of her background.
Her sire, Portal de la Luisa is the result of Paso Fino bloodlines going back five generations. He has won several championships including: the 2005 National 4 year old colt Classic Fino Championship, the 2005 Western Regional Classic Fino Grand Championship, the 2005 Western Regional 4 year old colt Classic Fino Championship, the 2005 Miami Winter Festival 4 year old colt Classic Fino Championship, the 2004 Snowbird Classic 3 year old Classic Fino Championship in Ocala, FL, and the 2003 World Cup 32-36 month Classic Fino Championship in Medellin, Colombia . Her dam, Luna Llena de Rosa, is also a champion being named the 2006 National Fino Champion 3 year old Filly and the 2006 3rd Grand National Fino Mare Champion.
The Mission Statement of Rancho de Milagro reads in part: “...maintaining the best traits of the Paso Fino breed through our careful breeding with only the most compatible genetics. Quality of breed not quantity is what we stand for.” Luna Llena de Milagro appears to be a living embodiment of that statement. Will she be a future champion? Only time will tell but right now she’s busy discovering a brand new world.
