Industry Hills - Two Rodeos in One
While all rodeos give back to the community, the Industry Hills Pro Rodeo not only supports causes that benefit the community as a whole, but that specifically target schools and special-needs kids. Rodeo proceeds go to The Gabriel Foundation which benefits as many as 10,000 young people in the San Gabriel Valley who are mentally challenged, physically handicapped or come from disadvantaged or abusive homes. Its commitment, however, goes beyond simple monetary support. Every year students are invited to the Community Kids Day and this year students from 34 schools in six school districts participated. Prior to the performance the schools were sent booklets about Western history and rodeo so that the information could be integrated into history classes. The rodeo experience then helped to bring that history alive. For many kids, this was the first time they experienced a rodeo and, according to both teachers and students, this visit was a field trip they both looked forward to and enjoyed.
It was saturday’s and sunday’s performances, however, that brought in the capacity crowds. With a total purse of $43,453 for the two days, the event attracted top Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) and Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) member contestants, many of whom have been Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) qualifiers. Among WNFR qualifiers present were roper Clint Cooper, saddle bronc riders Cody Wright and Rusty Allen, and team roper Blaine Linaweaver. Several of stock contractor Flying U Rodeo’s roughstock have also been to the WNFR including bareback bronc Kattle Kall, saddle bronc Wicked Felina and bulls Sam’s Town and Domino Theory.
An often overlooked but dynamic and essential part of the rodeo was the man on the paint horse. With over 40 years rodeo experience, Don Jessers, one of the PRCA’s leading announcers, returned for a 14th year as the Industry Hills announcer. Drawing on his own time as a saddle bronc and bareback rider and team roper he understands the events and was able to clearly convey the action in the arena to the audience.
All in all, the Industry Hills Pro rodeo provided two full days of action packed competition in which horses and riders displayed their best abilities in contests of strength, endurance, skill and agility. Rodeo is a tough sport and the crowd who watched the action left the arena with a deep sense of respect for the riders and the animals involved.
