The California High School Rodeo Association (CHSRA) is a local branch of the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) based in Denver, Colorado. The goal of both organizations is to promote an interest in rodeo among high school students which they do by providing training and establishing a schedule of rodeos. Over 12,000 high school students, both locally and abroad, compete in over 1,100 rodeos each year. In addition, junior high school students compete in the Wrangler Division which provides a similar event structure and whose competitions are usually held in conjunction with the High School events.

The CHSRA was founded in 1970 to develop sportsmanship, horsemanship, and character, and to encourage boys and girls to continue in school, participate in rodeos, and then continue on to college. Members must be enrolled in high school or the equivalent and meet grade point and conduct requirements of both the National and California High School Rodeo Associations. The High School Rodeo season is from September thru May and State Finals are held in in June. Approximately 300 contestants will compete in the State Finals with the top four contestants in each event qualifying for the National High School Finals Rodeo which are held in July.

California is divided into Nine Districts by counties. District 8 is one of the largest and includes Riverside, Orange, Imperial, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. Competition is divided into girls, boys, and coed events.

Girls events: all-around cowgirl, barrel racing, breakaway roping, pole bending, goat tying, team roping, and girls cutting horse.

Boys events: all-around cowboy, tie down (calf) roping, steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, team roping, and boys cutting horse.

Coed events: team roping

The Wrangler Division also includes boys chute dogging, breakaway roping and goat tying. In addition to these there is also ribbon roping, the only event which must have one girl and one boy participant.

All of the above listed events took place on February 17th, with the exception of cutting, steer wrestling and senior chute dogging, and lasted until the early evening.
