Like all sports, rodeo has its various levels. Each succeeding step can possibly lead to a professional career and ultimately to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. On February 15th District 8 of the California High School Rodeo Association held the first of its two rodeos at Industry Hills Expo Center.
The California High School Rodeo Association (CHSRA) is a local branch of the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) based in Denver, Colorado. The goal of both organizations is to promote an interest in rodeo among high school students which they do by providing training and establishing a schedule of rodeos. Over 12,000 high school students, both locally and abroad, compete in over 1,100 rodeos each year.
The CHSRA was founded in 1970 to develop sportsmanship, horsemanship, and character, and to encourage boys and girls to continue in school, participate in rodeos, and then continue on to college. Members must be enrolled in high school or the equivalent and meet grade point and conduct requirements of both the National and California High School Rodeo Associations. The High School Rodeo season is from September thru May and State Finals are held in in June. Approximately 300 contestants will compete in the State Finals with the top four contestants in each event qualifying for the National High School Finals Rodeo which are held in July.
