A horse sale of one kind or another can be found almost every weekend and all of them follow a fairly standard format. The All Breed Sale, which completed its second year at Fairplex in November, is attempting to do something different which will benefit both buyers and sellers. One of the policies they have instituted is the sale preview held on the Saturday before the main sale. This showcases the horses in the sale giving the sellers a chance to show off their horses while the buyers the can compare the offerings and verify the catalogue notes. The buyer then can be confident that if the catalog says that a particular horse is trailerable, for example, that is indeed the case. The preview is also very entertaining as the horse are put through their paces for all to see. The Pony Sale held on Saturday night was somewhat of a disappointment as there were only seven consignments but since there were about thirty people in attendance it was decided to go ahead with the sale. Even though the number of consignments were small one pony sold for $1,775 and several others brought in from $300 to $600. The main sale on Sunday featured a number of horses representing several breeds and disciplines including both show and working horses as well as a number young horses under training. Three horses, a stallion and two mares, brought the top prices of $6,000 or more but several could be purchased in price ranges to match just about any budget. Among the high sellers was MaCluckey Midnight a 9 yo Black Overo APHA Champion Stallion with over 40 halter points and over 50 performance points. The top selling mare was Sayos Lil Kickback a 3 yo AQHA Palomino. In 2008 The Pony Sale will be replaced on Saturday night by the Southern California Specialty Horse Sale. Different types of horses will be featured at each Saturday night sale, e.g. Trail Riding Horses in February, Barrel Racing Horses in May, and so on through the year. Horse for these sales will also be entered into a specialty class competition on that Saturday and will be competing for prizes. Prizes will be awarded from 1st through 5th place and will include a custom made saddle, or its equivalent, for 1st and gift certificates from feed & tack/clothing stores for 2nd through 5th. The specialty class will be judged by an approved horse show judge, unless it is a timed event such as barrel racing. Performances will be filmed and shown at the sale that night.
